A Guide for Families

MOVING WITH CHILDREN

At Swift Removals Ltd, we know moving house can be both exciting and challenging for families with children. Kids often pick up on stress and uncertainty, which is why a thoughtful approach can make all the difference. Here’s how we help parents turn moving day into a smoother, more positive experience for the whole family.

Talk Openly About the Move

Children, especially younger ones, may feel anxious about leaving familiar surroundings. Take time to explain what’s happening and why. Use simple, positive language – focus on the positives (a bigger room, a garden, or being closer to cousins).

Involve Them in the Process

Giving kids small responsibilities makes them feel included:

  • Let them decorate their own moving boxes with stickers or drawings.
  • Ask older children to help label boxes for their room.
  • Create a “treasure box” for their most-loved toys, which travels with them, not the moving van.

Visit the New Area

If possible, take a family trip to the new neighbourhood. Show them the playground, school, or nearest ice-cream shop. Familiarity builds excitement and reduces fear of the unknown.

Pack a “Kids’ Essentials Bag”

Include snacks, drinks, a change of clothes, favourite toys, and comfort items. Think of it like a travel bag for a long journey – it avoids rummaging through boxes mid-move.

Keep Kids Safe and Occupied

Moving day is busy, with heavy lifting and lots of activity. If possible:

  • Arrange childcare with a friend or family member.
  • Or set up a safe, quiet space with books, tablets, or colouring activities while we work.

Comfort Items Within Reach

Whether it’s a teddy, blanket, or tablet with favourite shows – keeping familiar comforts close helps kids stay calm during the chaos.

Prioritise Children’s Bedrooms

Unpack and set up their rooms first. Having their bed, toys, and posters in place quickly helps children feel at home right away.

Stick to Familiar Routines

Keep mealtimes and bedtimes as consistent as possible. Familiar routines help kids feel secure during big changes.

Explore Together

Turn the new house into an adventure. Go on a treasure hunt to discover rooms, gardens, and hiding spots. Walk the neighbourhood together to find playgrounds, parks, or nearby shops.

Let Them Make Choices

Even small decisions – like where their desk goes or what colour to paint their new walls – can give children a sense of control and excitement

Swift Removals Tip

Many parents tell us their children loved opening the Special Moving Day Box we encouraged them to pack. It becomes  the first thing they open in their new room – a familiar anchor in a brand-new space.
